Long Coc in Phu Tho Province, 112 kilometers from Hanoi, comprises numerous hills covered in tea plantations. They look like upturned bowls placed next to each other.

Pham Hoang Cuong, a Hanoi photographer, drove more than two hours from the capital to Tan Son District, around 70 kilometers from Viet Tri Town, the capital of Phu Tho, and had to wake up early in the morning to hunt for the best sights to photograph.

The most beautiful photos of the hills are taken before the sun rises and the mist rolls gently in.

“During this time there are patches of fog moving slowly around the hills with the clouds lying close to the top of the hills and mysteriously covering parts of the area,” Cuong said.

During weekends many youngsters choose Long Coc to take romantic photos with partners and pre-wedding photos.

Long Coc is also an ideal place to chill, away from the bustle of the city and amid the tranquility of the hills.

The tea hills are scenic, particularly in the morning, when they are shrouded in fog. The fog lingers around the top during the transition from autumn to winter.

Exploring the Long Coc tea hills and Xuan Son National Park in Phu Tho, visitors can get to know about the life and culture of the Muong ethnic minority people through a homestay service.

The mountains in Phu Tho are home to Muong ethnic minority group, whose culture and customs attract the interest of many tourists.

The homestay service includes a special activity, where both visitors and Muong natives introduce their culture through various performances by a camping fire at night.

Tea farming is an important occupation in Phu Tho and the main source of income for many locals. A typical tea plantation in the hills of Long Coc measures around a hectare.

At Long Coc, farmers can be spotted strolling between the tea bushes with a basket on their backs and a non la, the Vietnamese conical hat, on their head to shelter them from the sun.

The tea ‘islands’ are compared with the islets in Ha Long Bay, which is a UNESCO world heritage site in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, where limestone islets and pillars jut out of a bay.

Mu Cang Chai, a rural district in Yen Bai Province with iconic rice terraces, will host a paragliding festival from September 20-22.

The annual festival, organized by VietWings Hanoi Paragliding Club since 2013, has become the largest such event in the country.

Its timing makes the festival more popular: it coincides with the rice harvest season in Mu Cang Chai, which is said to be at its most beautiful from late September to early October, when the fields are dyed yellow.

This year around 200 local and foreign competitors are expected to take part in the festival, six times the number in its inaugural year.

The paragliders will take off from Khau Pha Mountain, one of the four most dangerous passes in Vietnam due to its foggy winding roads and steep terrain.

Khau Pha rises 1,200 meters, and will provide the contestants with the best views of the golden carpet stretching over 500 hectares in the Mu Cang Chai valley.

Visitors who love adventure can join the paragliders as passengers and ride tandem over the terrace fields, voted as one of “the most colorful places” on the planet by U.S. magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Mu Cang Chai, around seven hours by road to the northwest of Hanoi, is at the foot of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.

The H’Mong ethnic group started carving rice terraces into the mountains centuries ago and continue to plant the crop today.

In 2017 the terraced fields were named one of the 19 most picturesque peaks on earth by U.S. travel site Insider.

National Geographic has chosen a photo of UNESCO heritage site Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam among this year’s best summer scenes.

With the summer coming to an end, photo editors of NatGeo, a world-famous magazine covering science, geography, history, and world culture, invited photographers to look back at their favorite scenes.

Filipina Hannah Reyes Morales’ photo of Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province, around four hours to the east of Hanoi, taken during her recent trip, featured among their 24 best.

“Summer in Southeast Asia for me is about the sea,” NatGeo quoted Morales as saying.

“Ha Long reminded me of days in my teenage years, coming of age with salt in my hair from sticky, warm summers by the water. So distinct. Everything in the country felt new to me when I took this image. But the blues and greens of the water were comforting in their familiarity.”

Ha Long Bay is an increasingly familiar name on the global tourism map, with its popularity confirmed by routine listings in prestigious magazines.

Around 5.2 million foreigners visited Ha Long Bay last year, up 22 percent from a year ago and accounting for 30 percent of the 15.6 million foreign tourists to come to Vietnam.

Recent events that have heightened the bay’s attraction include the filming there of Hollywood blockbuster Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and the launch of Vietnam’s first private airport, Van Don International Airport, in Quang Ninh late last year to offer foreign tourists easier access.

A new expressway connecting the Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway with Quang Ninh’s Ha Long Town, which opened to traffic last September, reduces the Hanoi-Ha Long commute by 50 km to 130 km.

Other top summer photos voted by NatGeo’s editors included of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, an offering of June apricots in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, boats gathering on the Meghna River in Bangladesh, and a train trip in China’s Xinjiang.

British travel magazine Rough Guides has voted for Ha Long Bay as one of the 100 most beautiful places to visit next year.

In the “The Rough Guides to the 100 Best Places on Earth,” the magazine described “the scattering of limestone pinnacles jutting out of the smooth waters of Ha Long Bay”, around four hours east of Hanoi, as an “incredible sight.”

It is the only Vietnamese destination in the list, which covers many historical and cultural sites around the world such as the Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Forbidden City in China, Kamniške-Savinja Alps in Slovenia, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania, and the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue in Mongolia.

Dropping anchor in the bay to explore small islands and caves is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Rough Guides said, adding that “the best junk boats have private cabins and serve gourmet food and in the early morning you can pull back the curtains to watch the sunlight dancing on the emerald green water.”

Since its recognition as a UNESCO natural world heritage in 1994 Ha Long Bay has entrenched itself on the global tourism map, receiving rave reviews from travel bloggers and filmmakers. Around 5.2 million foreigners visited the bay last year, up 22 percent from a year earlier. A total of 15.6 million visited the country.

In its latest conservation move, the Ha Long Bay management said all tourism services in the bay would limit the use of plastic bags and straws from September 1. Fifteen local firms providing tourist boats, kayaks and high-speed boats will embark on a pilot program, banning the use of plastic products on sightseeing boats, starting August 1.

The recent improvements in infrastructure have made traveling to and around Ha Long much easier for foreigners. Last December Van Don International Airport, 50 kilometers from Ha Long Bay, opened.

An expressway connecting the Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway with Ha Long, opened to traffic last September, reducing the Hanoi-Ha Long commute by 50 km to 130 km.

In addition to the popular kayaking and cruise tours, visitors can book Ha Long Heli Tours, a new helicopter tour, through Fastsky, the country’s first helicopter ride-sharing service offered by ride-hailing firm FastGo.

The South China Morning Post recently named Ha Long Bay in its list of 10 most popular Asian attractions. British magazine Woman and Home last May labeled the bay one of the most mentioned global cruise destinations on Instagram.

Three men, one Lao and two Vietnamese, were arrested near Hanoi Wednesday while transporting 39.6 kilos (87 pounds) of heroin.

Neng Vavue Nordouda of Laos and two Vietnamese men, Vu A Thai and Vu A So, were traveling in a car on the Thai Nguyen- Cho Moi Expressway, one and half hour drive north of Hanoi, when they were stopped by local police.

Police checked the vehicle and found heroin hidden under its floor and inside its door.

Expanding the investigation, the anti-drug trafficking police forces arrested two other men and are looking for other ring members.

Drug trafficking and drug abuse have continued in Vietnam despite the country having some of the world’s toughest drug laws.

Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.

The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.

Vietnam is a key trafficking hub for narcotics around the Golden Triangle, an intersection of China, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar and the world’s second largest drug producing region.

Rice fields in Bac Son Valley of Lang Son Province, 160 km north of Hanoi, have donned their yellow-gold harvest cloak.

Farmers in the valley of Lang Son, which borders China, cultivate two rice crops a year that they harvest in July and November.

In late July and early August every year, the ripening paddy fields turn different shades of yellow and green, while wispy white clouds float above, making the panoramic view of the valley a sight to behold.

To see Bac Son Valley at its best, it’s best to hike up the Na Lay Mountain.

A dash of brown is added to the patchwork of yellows and greens because of the different times at which some of the rice is planted and harvested.

The rice harvest season in Bac Son Valley happens sooner than in other localities and lasts about a week, giving visitors a short span in which to enjoy the sight of vast yellow-green fields. A two or three day trip at this time is a sure winner.

Bac Son was once not as well known as other sites like Y Ty in Lao Cai Province or Mu Cang Chai in Yen Bai Province, but photographers and backpackers are flocking here in increasing numbers during the rice harvesting season.

A river meanders through the fields that have limestone outcrops as their background. The area is home to the Tay, Nung and Dao ethnic minority groups who live in small houses next to their rice fields.

In the afternoon, people burn straw to clean up the fields and prepare for the next crop.

Mountains surrounding the Bac Son Valley are good sites for cloud hunting, giving the place an added attraction. From Hanoi, follow National Highway 3 to Thai Nguyen Province, and then 80 km on Highway 1B to reach the place.

On the way to Bac Son Valley early morning, visitors can stop by the Tam Canh mountain pass, about 3 km from Bac Son Town, to enjoy another majestic landscape.

Northern Vietnam valley unrolls its golden carpet - 6

Photographer Bui Vinh Thuan, a native of Bac Son, said the peak of Na Lay Mountain is about 400 m above sea level, and a great place to view the entire Bac Son Valley below.

“When the sun rises behind the mountains and valleys hidden in the clouds, Bac Son looks like a water color painting,” Thuan said.

He advised that visitors wake up as early as 3:30 a.m. to climb 1,200 stone steps in an hour to reach the Na Lay Peak. Climbing the steps after rainy nights is risky because they become slippery, he cautioned. And even in the summer, tourists should carry a thin jacket because it is cold early in the mornings and late in the night.

How to get there

Buses to Lang Son Province leave frequently from the Gia Lam, Nuoc Ngam and Giap Bat bus stations in Hanoi. Ticket prices are in the VND100,000 – 200,000 ($4-9) range. From the Lang Son bus station, one can take a taxi to Bac Son Valley for VND500,000 ($20).

There are trekkers and photographers who drive their motorbikes or cars all the way from Hanoi via the Nhat Tan bridge, Highway 3 and Thai Nguyen Province, turn right at Highway 1B and drive another 75 to 80 km to reach the valley.

Overnight stays

Hostels and homestays are available near the foot of the Na Lay Mountain in Quynh Son Village for VND90,000 – 200,000 ($3-8) per night. To save time going down the mountain, an option is to camp overnight on the mountaintop, for which tents, blankets, flashlights, lighters, food etc. have to be packed.

Hai Phong, 120 km east of Hanoi, is known as the city of flamboyants. The flower usually blooms in May and June. Pham Van Dong Street, which connects the city center with the tourist resort area of Do Son, is 18 km long and has more than 4,000 trees. It is dubbed the longest flower road in Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay is one of the three natural wonders in Asia to break into CNN’s list of 25 most beautiful places on the planet.

The other two are Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China and El Nido in the Philippines.

“One of the most popular natural attractions in South East Asia, Ha Long Bay is home to 1,969 islets of hulking limestone and deep, green waters that are home to myriad floating villages,” CNN said.

Cua Van floating fishing village in Ha Long Bay is one of the hidden gems in Vietnam that has yet to be overrun by vacationers. It is home to more than 170 fishing families, the cable network added.

Ha Long Bay, situated around four hours to the west of Hanoi by road, was recognized as world heritage site in 1994 by UNESCO. It was also voted among the world’s seven new natural wonders by Swiss organization New Open World in 2011.

Its attraction has increased after becoming the setting for Hollywood blockbuster “Kong: Skull Island” in 2017 and getting Van Don Airport, Vietnam’s first private airport, late last year.

The CNN list also includes the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, Mount Toubkal in Morocco, the Maldives, Lake District in the U.K., and Vancouver Island in Canada.

U.K. travel site Rough Guides recently included Ha Long Bay in the top ten UNESCO heritage sites in Asia.

In 2015 the bay was hailed by U.S. travel guide site Smarter Travel as one of the best ecological spots in the world.

U.S. news site Business Insider has described an overnight Ha Long cruise trip a “must-try” travel experience in Asia.
