Tu Duc Pagoda (painted yellow) is located on the fourth floor of Hung Vuong apartment building. The pagoda was built in 1970, around the same time the building was established.

In front of Tu Duc Pagoda stands a large censer and altar facing the buildings opposite.

Monk Thich Chan Khai, in charge of the pagoda, said: “My master originally planned to build a pagoda in Phu Lam area (District 6). But the owner of this complex, a follower of Buddhism, gifted us this entire fourth floor instead.”

The pagoda’s interior equals the size of 10 apartments, covering an area of about 700 square meters. All pillars, ceilings and floors have been kept intact as per initial design.

Unlike other pagodas, there are no ancestral house, monk’s house, or bell tower.

There are about 10 Buddha statues placed in the great hall. Behind the altar lies a small room where the abbot can rest. Apart from the abbot and manager, Tu Duc Pagoda does not have any other monks.

The remaining space is taken up by a statue of Cundi, a goddess with 18 arms placed on a lotus flower. Next to the statue is an office and behind a space dedicated to worshipping monks that have made a great contribution to Tu Duc Pagoda.

Because of the limited space, the pagoda does not feature many detailed designs, with only a few lotus shapes on the gate.

Right next to the great hall is a kitchen and storeroom for jars of ash.

The pagoda holds about 2,000 jars of ash, carefully arranged on the four meter high shelves and cleaned daily.

The pagoda garden includes many types of ornamental plants. Besides, there is a statue of Guanyin, a Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion, and a small tower containing the remains of the monk who founded the pagoda.

The fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic has become distressingly evident in Hanoi’s iconic Old Quarter, where for-rent signs have mushroomed on closed building gates.

Figures from the tax department of Hoan Kiem District, where the Old Quarter is located, show 390 businesses and 1,155 merchant families making a living by providing services in their house and on the sidewalk have either temporarily suspended operations or closed for good.

“In the past, there were many tourists, mostly Westerners. Now there are no customers,” said Linh, a souvenir shop owner on Ma May Street, adding that she spends her days these days cleaning and organizing dusty items.

Nearby, Nhung’s banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich) shop on Dinh Liet Street, usually crowded with customers, now is deserted.

“We used to sell about 400-500 banh mi from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Now we only sell about 150,” she said.

To attract more Vietnamese customers, she has a discount program for online orders and has cut down delivery fees. She also plans to add more items to the menu soon.

Like many other shop owners in the Old Quarter, she wants the world to be free from the coronavirus so that international tourism can resume.

According to the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee, the pandemic has negatively impacted its growth targets, especially with tourism revenues falling almost 65 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year.

Before the pandemic hit Vietnam, the district attracted about 30,000 international visitors a week on average, with the Old Quarter its biggest draw.

In March, when Hanoi became a Covid-19 hotspot, the district saw just 2,000-3,000 visitors per week. From May until last weekend, this figure plunged to a dismal 500-700 with no relief in immediate sight.

The Vietnamese passport continues to be among those enjoying the least visa free access, placed 89th out of 109 positions in the Henley & Partners ranking updated for the third quarter.

Those holding a Vietnamese passport are able to access 54 countries and territories, according to the Henley Passport Index 2020 that the British global citizenship and residence advisory firm released this week.

In Southeast Asia, a Vietnamese passport is slightly more powerful than that of Laos (93) and Myanmar (96), with visa free access to 50 and 47 destinations, respectively.

Singapore and Malaysia hold the most powerful passports in the region with the former ranking 2nd with visa exemption to 190 destinations and the latter 14th, exempted from 178.

Japan has the most powerful passport in the world, with its citizens able to visit 191 countries and territories without applying for a visa. South Korea shared third position with Germany, with visa free access to 189 destinations.

With the Donald Trump administration pursuing a hostile immigration policy, the U.S. lost its throne as the most powerful passport in the world, standing at 7th alongside the U.K.

The index ranked passports of 199 countries and territories based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa though temporary travel restrictions are still imposed in many parts of the world amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The standard ranking does not take into account temporary bans due to the impacts of the pandemic, Henley & Partners said.

5,361 Chinese nationals including 4,800 tourists are stuck in Khanh Hoa Province after all flights to China were suspended from February 1 amidst the novel coronavirus epidemic.

The non-tourist Chinese are investors and legal workers, Nguyen Dac Tai, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa, said Sunday.

Local authorities have petitioned the Prime Minister for help, saying all stranded Chinese nationals desire to return home.

The Vietnamese government has ordered the suspension of all flights to China as the deadly new coronavirus (nCoV) outbreak spread rapidly, claiming 361 lives in China and one in the Philippines.

Khanh Hoa, home to the popular beach destination of Nha Trang, is one of three localities in Vietnam to have declared a coronavirus epidemic. Thanh Hoa in the central region and Vinh Phuc in the north are the other two provinces.

Last Saturday, a female hotel staff in Nha Trang was confirmed as Vietnam’s sixth case of pneumonia virus infection. She had caught the nCoV infection from two Chinese nationals currently quarantined in Saigon.

Since last Tuesday, Khanh Hoa’s tourism sector has stopped all activities to bring Chinese tourists to the province.

Nha Trang, well known for its beaches and scuba diving, is a popular Vietnamese destination among Chinese nationals. It helped draw 2.4 million visitors to Khanh Hoa last year, a major share of them Chinese arrivals.

Vietnam’s government declared the novel coronavirus an epidemic on Saturday.

Aside from mainland China and Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, the U.S., South Korea, France, Germany, Canada, the UAE, Nepal, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India, the Philippines, the U.K., Russia, Finland, Nepal, Sweden, and Spain have confirmed infection cases by Sunday.

The Vietnamese government has deployed various measures to combat the virus, including halting all flights to coronavirus-hit areas, suspending visas for visitors from those regions, quarantining Chinese workers returning to Vietnam after the Lunar New Year holiday (Tet) and suspending spring festivals as well as temporarily closing schools.

Vietnam received the World’s Best Golf Destination 2019 award at the international World Golf Awards held in the UAE Tuesday.

The country beat seven other nominees Argentina, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Oman, Portugal and South Africa to grasp the awards’ top prize for the first time.

It also won the Asia’s Best Golf Destination award for the third consecutive year, surpassing China, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand.

Vietnam has also been nominated besides two other countries, China and Thailand, for the Best Golf Destination in Asia-Pacific award, which will be announced in India on November 6.

World Golf Awards have been granted annually since 2014.

Voting for the awards lasted from February 21 to September 15 this year. Votes were cast by professionals working within the industry as well as golf tourism consumers.

According to the Vietnam Professional Golf Association, there were over 70,000 people playing the game as a leisure sport in 2018, up from 10,000 in 2009.

The surge in Asian tourist numbers has seen domestic carriers launch more direct air routes connecting Vietnam with major Asian cities.

Vietjet Air on October 30 commenced its latest international service between Da Nang City in central Vietnam and Japan’s Tokyo through the Haneda International Airport, marking the low-cost airline’s fifth route between the two countries.

This is the first direct service between Da Nang and Haneda, Japan’s busiest airport and one of Asia’s busiest, Vietjet said in a release. Haneda is less than 30 minutes from downtown Tokyo. The new route operates daily return services with each flight taking around five hours and 30 minutes.

Vietnam has emerged as one of the most popular travel destinations for Japanese. Japan is also one of the country’s biggest investors. More than 600,000 Japanese visited Vietnam in the first ten months of the year, up 15 percent from a year ago.

Amid the Chinese tourism boom, Vietnam Airlines opened a direct route connecting HCMC with Haikou City in China’s southern province of Hainan on October 28, with four flights per week.

Vietnam received more than 4.5 million Chinese tourists in the first 10 months, up 9.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 31 percent of all foreign arrivals.

The national flag carrier also begun operating direct flights from HCMC to Indonesia’s Bali island, starting October 27. The route operates seven flights a week, each taking around four hours.

This December, Vietjet Air plans to operate direct air services between HCMC and New Delhi and between Hanoi and the Indian capital, becoming the first Vietnamese airline to launch direct air links to India.

The former route will open from December 6 onwards with four flights a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, while the latter will operate from December 7 onwards with three flights a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The number of Indian tourists to Vietnam remained low compared to other Asian countries such as China and South Korea, with only 130,000 arrivals in 2018. But the growth was 30 percent year-on-year. China and South Korea are Vietnam’s top feeder markets with 4.9 million and 3.4 million visitors last year respectively.

The number of international tourists to Vietnam reached 14.5 million in the first 10 months, surging 34.3 percent year-on-year, with Asian tourists accounting for 75 percent of total foreign arrivals, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism reported.

A recent report by Mastercard said that Vietnam has the second fastest growing outbound market in the Asia Pacific region after Myanmar, with projected annual growth of 9.5 percent between 2016 and 2021. About 7.5 million Vietnamese travelers will travel outside the country in 2021, it added.
