Work on bridge to HCMC coastal district to begin in 2022

Construction of the Can Gio Bridge, connecting Ho Chi Minh City’s outlying namesake district with the city’s center, will start in 2022.

Deputy Minister of Transport Bui Hoa An announced the construction schedule at a meeting with the district’s voters on Monday, saying the completion date is set for late 2025.

He expressed the hope that locals owning lands could reach agreement with authorities to hand them over so that the work could be implemented on schedule.

The VND5.3 trillion ($230 million) bridge will replace the Binh Khanh ferry as the means to connect the coastal Can Gio District with the rest of HCMC.

The cable-stayed bridge will be 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) long and have four lanes and navigational clearance of 55 meters (180 feet).

It will start at the intersection of roads 15B and 2 in Nha Be District’s Phu Xuan urban area, span the Soai Rap and Cha Va rivers and end on Rung Sac Street in Can Gio District.

City authorities had initially thought of building it under a combined build-operate-transfer and build-transfer model.

But the National Assembly passed a law on public-private partnerships last June that does not feature the latter model.

Apartment prices in HCMC have risen by more 50 percent across all segments since 2015, real estate firm DKRA said.

In 2015 the average price of a high-end apartment was VND40 million ($1,720) per square meter. It had risen to VND61 million ($2,630) by August, and would continue to increase in the coming months, the firm said.

The average price of a mid-range apartment rose from VND21 million ($900) to VND32 million ($1,380) between 2015 and August 2019, a 52.4 percent increase. But the gain has been slow this year.

In the affordable segment, prices have increased from VND16 million ($690) to VND24 million ($1,030), a 50 percent rise. In the last 12 months they have risen by 9 percent.

Prices are expected to keep rising due to a short supply since projects are taking a lot of time to complete legal procedures even as demand remains strong given the high net migration to the city, DKRA said.

According to real estate firm Savills, total supply, which includes unsold units and newly built units in the city in the last quarter of 2018, fell 44 percent year-on-year.

This number fell by a further 34 percent in the first quarter of 2019 to just over 12,000 apartments, which represents a 57 percent drop compared to the first quarter of 2018. One of the problems the city market faces is the legal difficulty in selling apartments, Le Hoang Chau, chairman of HCMC Real Estate Association, said.

Many projects are stuck at various levels from applying for approval from local authorities and getting permission to begin construction to getting permission to begin selling.

According to the city Department of Statistics, Saigon’s base population at the end of 2018 was 8.85 million people.

A long-delayed parking project in downtown Saigon has been cancelled, citing investor incompetency and contract violations.

The HCMC Department of Transport on Friday officially informed the project investor, the Underground Space Investment Development Corporation, the termination of the BOT contract for the project in Le Van Tam Park, District 1.

The decision was taken because the investor violated the contract’s terms and showed a lack of competency to carry out the project, the department said on the Ministry of Transport’s news portal.

The parking lot was meant to accommodate 2,000 motorbikes, 1,250 cars, and 28 buses and trucks in an area of 100,000 square meters. The project broke ground in 2010, but stalled soon after.

Last month, the Department of Transport said the project was paused because many important requirements were not finalized, including applying for construction permits and evaluating technical designs.

Saigon had planned four underground parking spaces in the downtown Districts 1 and 3, totally accommodating 6,300 cars and 4,000 motorbikes. None of these have been implemented.

Parking space in the downtown area of the 13-million strong HCMC now only meets around 7 percent of total demand, according to urban planning experts.

Ha Long Bay among cheap holiday destinations for Singaporeans

Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh province has been named among cheap holiday destinations nearby where Singaporeans can go, according to a list released by AsiaOne, a leading digital content site that gives readers a fresh perspective on news that matter to our readers.

If you’re taking a short holiday at the end of this year, why not spend it visiting one of the most beautiful locations in Asia – Ha Long Bay. It’s one of Vietnam’s most iconic holiday destinations primarily for its beautiful and secluded grottoes, lagoons, semi-inhabited islands, and beaches.

AsiaOne advises travelers that just keep in mind that even though the Vietnam dong is the national currency, you should bring along at least US$200 (S$271.30) in smaller denominations just in case. And make sure you sharpen your bargaining skills before you go.

Visiting Ha Long Bay without taking a cruise and taking in the scenery is like buying a ticket to Universal Studios Singapore and not getting on the rides – it’s why you go. “Aside from taking a cruise, you can also go kayaking, scuba diving, rock climbing, or visit the local casino,” AsiaOne wrote.

Depending on when you fly, expect ticket prices to be about US$250 to US$300 per person. But you’ll also need to take a bus or a taxi to Ha Long Bay. It can be a bit complex to get there, but following these directions helps.

In 2018, Quang Ninh province welcomed 5.2 million visitors, a 22% increase from the same period last year. The sector earned over VND24 trillion (US$1.03 billion), up 28% year on year, according to Quang Ninh Department of Tourism.

At Can Gio tourist site

The project, stretching from Can Thanh town to Long Hoa commune, is expected to be completed in three stages over an 11-year period, between 2019 and 2030.

As the expansion project requires an investment of more than 5 trillion VND (217.4 million USD) and includes construction of a golf course, any adjustment to the project must be approved by the Prime Minister after its submission to the ministry.

The People’s Committee said the project consists of a functional area with houses, urban service facilities, trees and traffic facilities, covering more than 750 hectares of land. In addition, a 2,100-hectare area for non-residential purposes is also included.

The Can Gio Tourism Urban Area Joint-Stock Company is the project investor.

Local residents, according to the proposal, will not live in the Can Gio coastal tourist area of 2,870ha, but will be able to operate businesses.

About 767 households raising clams in Long Hoa commune and Can Thanh town and 232 boats used for coastal fisheries will be directly affected by the project.

With the expanded area, the investor has agreed to support households that will lose their farming areas, including 79 clam-raising cooperatives. The total funding for affected clam cooperatives has reached 123.5 billion VND so far.

The investor will also give priority to local labourers, while creating conditions for apprenticeships or career change to ensure benefits for locals.

The project is in line with the city’s housing development plan between 2016 and 2020, according to the People’s Committee.

Tran Vinh Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said that if the PM approves the project, HCM City would instruct authorities to work with the Can Gio Tourism Urban Area Joint-Stock Company to complete land clearance.

The coastal district of Can Gio is located 60km away from downtown HCM City. It has great potential, with 13km of coastline, 34 square kilometres of beach area, and extensive mangrove rainforest intertwined with a dense system of rivers and canals and diverse flora and fauna.

Holiday website Wotif recently examined the best upcoming summer deals at more than 300 destinations and found that Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam was one of the top destinations to book airfares in advance. Not only that, once you’re there it’s super inexpensive.

“Think hearty pho soups for less than AU$5 (US$3.5), and bargains galore at the huge Ben Thanh Market. Visit the extraordinary War Remnants Museum and finish the day at a rooftop bar with a bottle of beer for just over AU$1 (US$0.7),” New Idea wrote.

Arizona in the US tops the list, followed by Buenos Aires in Argentina, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Hong Kong (China).

Earlier, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam has been ranked fourth among 2019’s coolest city break destinations, according to a list released by Refinery29, a leading global media company focused on young women.

“Culture trip calls this Vietnamese metropolis a truly affordable city with a buzzing cultural scene to match,” Refinery29 wrote.

There are plenty of hidden alleyways and public art displays to explore, so make sure you try “ca phe da” (iced coffee), a traditional Vietnamese iced coffee drink that provides an energizing caffeine and sugar hit, Refinery29 advises.

The number of foreign visitors to Ho Chi Minh City in the first quarter of 2019 is estimated at 2.25 million, equal to 27% of this year’s target and making up half the foreign arrivals in Vietnam in the period, VnExpress reported, citing the municipal Department of Tourism.

One is always curious to know what locals are selling and how a shopping experience in a foreign country is different from what you have at home.

In a city as large as Ho Chi Minh, there are endless opportunities for shopping ranging from local markets such as Ben Thanh to large shopping malls like Vincom Center. This guide will help you go to the right one when you visit one of Southeast Asia’s growing cities.

Takashimaya and Saigon Center are two malls in one. On one side of the building is Takashimaya, the Japanese retail brand that has stores all over Asia, and the main customer at Saigon Center. You could find yourself entering Saigon Center and exiting Takashimaya, so do not be confused.

It is one of the biggest retail places you will find in Ho Chi Minh City, and has everything you expect from a mall: restaurants, clothes, perfumes and more. It ticks all the boxes for what a shopping experience should be in Vietnam’s largest city.

The majority of brands here are international, and restaurants range from Asian to western. This is the kind of mall where you could spend a whole day.

People here speak good English since it is one of the go-to places for tourists. Prices are a bit higher than what you would find locally, but hey, it is in the heart of District 1.

Saigon Center: 65 Le Loi, District 1 // Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

Takashimaya: 92-94 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, District 1 // Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9:30am-9:30pm & Saturday to Sunday 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

As the name suggests, Parkson Saigon Tourist Plaza is indeed a place for tourists. Situated just opposite another huge mall, Vincom Center, and around the corner from Nguyen Hue walking street, this is a shopping experience of its own.

As it is owned by Parkson, it is home to many international brands, with a wide variety of fragrances and perfumes on the first floor.

It offers a unique food experience with cuisines from all over the world. In fact, it is one of the oldest malls that offer international products in this country. After 14 years, it is finally being renovated, but promises to look better than ever when it reopens.

What you find here is similar to what you find at Parkson’s Hung Vuong Plaza in District 5, slightly outside what you would call the city center.

The Hung Vuong building, both inside and outside, is quite old fashioned compared to the modern Vincom Center or Diamond Plaza. But the majority of what is sold inside consists of international brands. Well-known cosmetics and fragrances can be found as well as fashion brands such as Nike and Adidas.

If you are hungry, don’t worry. Not only are you surrounded by street food in the area, but the mall itself has restaurants. Cuisines range from local food to other Asian cuisines and western fast food chains such as KFC. Hung Vuong Plaza also consists of a gym and a cinema.

Prices are roughly similar to what you would pay in your own country, especially if you are buying an international brand. There are signs in both English and Vietnamese, and basic English is understood.

There is no free wifi.

If big shopping malls are not your thing, then you should definitely pay a visit to Saigon Square, which is just across the street from the giant Saigon Center. It is more of a market than a mall.

Its tenants are local businesses that sell a variety of items ranging from clothing to jewelry in booths that stand pretty close from each other.

Here you can find international brands at prices no mall can compete with. Like Ben Thanh Market, this is a place where you should test your bargaining skills.

Address: 81 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, District 1 // Opening hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Vincom malls

Vincom Center, one of the most popular malls in the city, is both an office building and a mall with more than 250 shops. What you get here is a dynamic shopping experience. The top and bottom floors are food heavens with endless choices.

As it is a major tourist hub, it is busy most of the time, and it does feel quite claustrophobic. It feels like a fast-paced shopping experience. However, that should not put you off as whatever you fancy or are looking for, you are guaranteed to find it there. Well-known brands such as Zara, H&M, Nike and Adidas can all be found here, and there is free wifi.

If you fancy something more leisurely, you can visit Vincom Mega Mall in District 2, which is quite popular with expats who live in the area.

As the name suggests, this Vincom mall is mega indeed. It has five floors and its own little ice ring on the top floor.

International brands, a gym, restaurants and even an arcade means there is something for everyone at this mall.

The signs are in both English and Vietnamese, and like most places in HCMC it has free wifi.

It is larger than Vincom Center and less busy. You definitely need a whole day to see this mall.

Vincom Center: 72 Le Thanh Ton, District 1 // Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

Vincom Mega Mall: 161 Hanoi Highway, District 2 // Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

Union Square

Union Square is the most luxurious form of shopping there is in Ho Chi Minh City.

Situated close to Nguyen Hue walking street, this is a place where you will find international brands at the other end of the price spectrum. It is where you’d need to have serious cash since there are no “cheap” brands here.

However, it is still worth a visit because many brands they sell here cannot be found elsewhere.

Address: 171 Dong Khoi, District 1 // Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 9 a.m.-10 p.m.

Diamond Plaza

Standing behind the Notre Dame Cathedral, Diamond Plaza is another shopping mall in District 1 and within walking distance of Vincom Center.

This modern glass building is home to familiar brands, both international and local. The layout of Diamond Plaza is slightly different: Rather than separate stores, you will find various brands in one common area.

So there is no Nike store near an Adidas store, but instead, you will find Nike apparel with other sports apparel on one floor.

The floor layout is designed in such a way that one level is for men, one for women, and so on.

There is a floor specifically for arcades, so it is a great place for kids.

Diamond Plaza has all the elements that make for a splendid mall: restaurants, clothing, jewelry, perfumes.

Nowzone Fashion Mall

A “hidden gem” as it does not seem to be well-known among foreigners is Nowzone Fashion Mall.

Situated in District 1, it is a large mall with a slew of global brands such as Nike and Crocs and local and Asian brands.

It has five floors and consists of a cinema on the fifth florr that shows both foreign and Vietnamese movies. On the fourth floor are a food market and an arcade.

For a place not really meant for foreigners, all the signs are in both English and Vietnamese.

Nowzone has its own wifi, and the connection is best on the fourth floor. Nowzone is the place to go to if you want to check out Asian fashion brands.

Address: 235 Nguyen Van Cu, District 1 // Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. & Saturday to Sunday 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

An Dong Plaza

Roughly a 20-minute walk from Hung Vuong Plaza is An Dong Plaza, a shopping center which stands at the heart of the city’s Chinatown. Again, it is not a touristy place, and people tending to shop here are locals. The significant difference between the two places is the shopping experience.

An Dong Plaza is more of a local/traditional shopping center. It consists mainly of local businesses, but there are also international brands sold at significantly lower prices.

This is the place for you if you are looking for a traditional shopping experience and want to avoid tourist traps. Mind you, they might not speak as much English as the other more touristy places.

The malls in this list all offer parking spaces, but it is also convenient to reach there on a taxi or xe om.

Address: 18 An Duong Vuong, District 5 // Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
