Thirty works by the doyen of Vietnamese artists, Mong Bich, constituting her first ever solo exhibition, is now open in Hanoi.

Titled “Between Two Centuries,” the exhibition featuring silk paintings, watercolors and sketches is being held at the French Institute in Hanoi from October 22 to November 22.

Portraits of painter Tran Van Can, a beggar Bich met on the street, or a scene from her village are among the works on display. Art lovers also have the opportunity to listen to the stories behind each work narrated by the painter herself.

One of her two sons, artist Bui Hoai Mai, says this of his mother: “Her painting is neither a political tool, nor a means of subsistence or a means of leaving a personal mark. For her, painting is simply the love of beauty and perseverance behind the easel.”

Bich is an embodiment of change in Vietnamese art and history over the past century, Professor Nora Taylor of the Chicago Fine Arts Academy once said.

She was born in Hanoi in 1931 and graduated from Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1970.

Bich is among the few female artists of her time to have won major awards. Her painting “Me Va Con” (Mother And Child) won first prize at a Viet Bac Interzone Department of Culture exhibit in 1961, while “Ba Gia” (Old Grandmother) won the top prize at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association show in 1993.

Vietnam’s “Rom” and an Iraq-Qatar co-production “Haifa Street” shared the top prize in the New Currents category at the Busan International Film Festival.

The winners were announced Saturday morning. The New Currents jury, headed by British director Mike Figgis, praised the Vietnamese film for its impressive use of “real, live locations” and “very satisfying” ending, the U.S.-based leading entertainment news site Variety reported.

The triumph of “Rom” at Busan has come as a surprise because the movie’s producers had previously written to the Busan festival organizers asking that it be withdrawn after Vietnamese cinema authorities said it had not been certified by the local censor board.

However, the organizing board of the film festival decided to screen the movie.

Developed from the critically acclaimed short film “4:30 p.m.”, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, the movie is about a teenage boy named Rom who lives in a slum in Saigon and sells lottery tickets for people in the neighborhood. His aim is to collect enough money to find his parents, who had abandoned him as a child.

Directed by Tran Dung Thanh Huy, “Rom is the first Vietnamese entry to receive the New Currents Award, which is given to the two best feature films selected from the first or second works of new Asian directors introduced in the category.

“Haifa Street”, the other winner of the prize, was praised as “a mature, grown up movie” made by a director that “exhibited a confidence and understanding of cinema language which sets the film apart.”

A grand prize of $30,000 was awarded to each of the two films.

The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), held October 3-10 this year, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia. This year, organizers said they had screened 299 films, of which 118 were world premieres, from 85 countries and territories. The screenings were watched by more than 189,000 people.

Over the past 20 years, student volunteers of the university have built hundreds of bridges in the province.

From wooden temporary bridges, they now have strong concrete ones helping them in daily life and work.

Le Van Son, former chairman of Long My Commune’s People’s Committee, has worked closely with the university’s students since they built the U Bridge in Linh Quy Village, Long My Commune in Giong Trom District.

The U Bridge, which was built in 2003, is more than 70m in length and 2.2m in width. It cost more than VND100 million (US$4,300) from sponsors.

More than 30 students of the university and dozens of local residents helped build the bridge. It was completed after one month.

Son’s house is about several hundred metres from the bridge, so he understands its importance.

Son told the Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper that before the bridge was built, the area was isolated.

Everything changed after the bridge was built, he said.

Thanks to the bridge, goods are transported easily and can be sold at high prices.

“The bridge was a big step in developing the commune,” said Son.

It is still strong after nearly 20 years, and local residents are grateful to the student volunteers.

Son said that at that time, to maintain progress, the students had to work from the morning until 9pm.

“Earlier it was very quiet and boring here, but during that period, the construction site was noisy with voices and smiles of the young people,” said Son.

Witnessing the students’ enthusiasm, local residents also helped bring food for the students.

Bui Van Det, deputy chairman of the Giong Trom District Fatherland Front Committee, has hosted student volunteers in his house for six years.

“I love the students so much because they work hard to help the district. Their love and sincerity makes us miss them,” Dệt told the Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper.

Secretary of the district Youth Union Nguyen Thanh Phụ said when the volunteer campaign ended, all students and local residents cried because they did not want to be far from each other.

“We understand each other and consider each other as our family members,” he said.

Besides the U Bridge, many other bridges were also made by student volunteers of the university including the Thuan Loi Bridge in Hoa Loi Commune, Thanh Phu District.

Nguyen Van Be, lives in Hoa Loi Commune, said thanks to the bridge, local students can travel more safely and easily. They no longer need canoes.

Dao Vu Hoang Nam, secretary of the University of Science and Technology Youth Union, said over the past 20 years, the university’s students had applied their knowledge into real life and helped people in Ben Tre Province.

The volunteer campaign brought students closer to residents in rural areas.

Experiencing the challenge, the students became more mature and made useful contributions to the nation, said Nam.

The second edition of Coracle Music Festival will be held November 29-30 in the southern beach town of Ho Tram, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

Indie rock singer William McCarthy from the U.S., South African R&B artists Nonku Phiri and HCMC-based pop-punk band 7Uppercuts are some of the artists who will take the main stage this year.

The second stage will feature Fleetmac Wood, a dance crew that exclusively perform Fleetwood Mac remixes, local DJ Jase Nguyen and U.S. DJ collective West Loop Chicago, who will be the final act of the festival.

Saigon’s top craft brewers will serve ice-cold beer on tap, and pop-up food stations will serve a wide variety of dishes as indie and hip-hop acts are performed on two stages from 5 p.m. till early next morning. Organizers will provide festival goers with free drinking water to avoid the beach getting littered with plastic bottles.

The performances will take place on Ho Tram beach, a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, so festival goers can not only listen to good music, but also enjoy stunning sunrises and sunsets. They can also have fun paddling, flying kites and riding jet-skis.

Ticket prices for the festival range from VND1.5-25 million ($66-1,096). For more information on tickets, visit here.

Upon returning to Vietnam, M finds that her pregnant niece Van is rushing into marriage. M begins to recount her own experiences, fearing that Van would make the same mistakes as she did.

The film receives a lot of media attention after it was screened at the film festival. The Variety magazine said it was an impressive mix of Vietnam’s past and present.

This was not the first award for “Tro Tan Ruc Ro”. The film had won an award at the Busan Film Festival in 2017.

This year’s Locarno International Film Festival, its 72nd edition, is taking place from August 7-17.
